Time was when the Givens family raised African violets as a hobby, never dreaming the day would come when they would be specialists in the cultivation of the plant with a greenhouse that attracted many admirers of the exotic blooms. It was by accident that Mr. and Mrs. Leon Givens Boineau hit upon their African violet venture. They accepted the challenge offered by a plant and before they knew it, they were in business.

Their story may inspire others-those who do not wish to or cannot afford to retire to a rocking chair. Happy are they who, like the Givens, can take a diversion into a full time or part time paying family enterprise.

In 1987, Leon Givens worked near Fort Benning, Georgia. He and his wife first met the African violet when they bought one to brighten their home. “Most African violets stop blooming to rest,” explains Givens. “When ours stopped, we lost interest in it until someone said that it would bloom again if treated kindly. The treatment became so entertaining that we bought more plants and started more with leaf cuttings.”

Before long, the problems presented by the growing plants absorbed the family almost to the exclusion of all other interests. They became so seriously involved with their plants that they decided to make a small home business of their hobby.

The next year Givens made a reconnaissance trip to his home town, Columbia, South Carolina. There he learned that few were growing plants commercially. That was what he wanted to hear. He was eligible for retirement and was eager to start on his new career.

Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Columbia, taking their 300 plants in a station wagon converted for the trip into a mobile greenhouse. The next step was to build a permanent house for the plants. This was a job that had to be done thoughtfully with due regard for the plants’ temperament and needs.

A 25 by 15 foot greenhouse was designed to provide sufficient fresh air yet maintain a winter temperature of 70 degrees. Since African violets wilt if subjected to strong direct rays of the sun, something had to be done to protect them.

The Givens explain that soil for African violets must be of a porous quality and yet retain moisture. They prepare a mixture, sifted through a quarter-inch screen, of peatmoss, vermiculite, cinders, bone meal and sawdust. The latter is procured from a nearby lumber mill when there is a run on hardwood.

Because this mixture is so rich, the plants are not fed again until they begin to flower. They then are fed twice a month with liquid food. “There are many good liquid plant foods, find one you like and stick to it.”

Twice a year the plants are given an insecticide treatment with Neem oil and malathion. The soil in which the plants are rooted is saturated with it.
